Kawartha Speedway: A View From the Home Stretch

FRASERVILLE, ON - With only 10 races on the 2010 schedule drivers, teams and fans knew that Kawartha Speedway’s 10th Anniversary season would move by very quickly.  Friday, August 6th the Fraserville, Ontario oval put the 6th show of the current campaign in the books with a full night of Hasiuk Trailer and Container Mini Stock, Better Carpet Thunder Car and NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model racing.  Added to the program was the 12th running of the Don Biederman Memorial event for the OSCAAR Outlaw Super Late Models.

The 22 late models were split into a pair of 10 lap qualifying heats, with Dan McHattie and Mike Sinopoli earning the checkered flags.  The father and son duo of Steve and Norm Mayhew shared the thunder car preliminary events, while Dwight Lavoie and Mike Nelson found their way to victory lane after the opening round of mini stock action.  10 lap OSCAAR qualifiers won by defending series champion Glenn Watson and Mike Beyore completing the early portion of the show.  Next up were the night’s semi features.  The late models were first and Earl Ireland took the win.  Steve Mayhew picked-up the thunder car checkered flag, with Daryl Fice earning the mini stock victory.  Qualifying concluded with Sean Cronan, Joe Sinopoli and Jack Horner using their late model, thunder car and mini stock consolation wins to advance to the main events.

For just the second time in the event’s history, OSCAAR brought the prestigious Don Biederman Memorial race to Kawartha Speedway.  Former late model track champion Jeff Hanley picked-up the win over Derrick Tiemersma and former Kawartha late model runner Brandon Watson.  Full results can be found at www.oscaar.ca.

The Better Carpet Thunder Car 20 lap feature was the first of the track’s weekly divisions to hit the speedway for their main event.  As quickly as the green flag came out, the yellow was waiving for a multi car incident on the back stretch that involved Chad Strawn, Norm Mayhew, Dave Lynch and others.  Everyone was able to continue, but tempers would be on the edge for the remainder of the show.  Once the dust had settled, Willie Reyns had claimed his second win of the year.  Howie Crowe, Sinopoli, Norm and Steve Mayhew rounded-out the top 5.

In the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Model feature, a few early yellow flags slowed the pace, but Kawartha’s headline division was ready to show their stuff and offered the capacity some excellent side-by-side action for the entire race distance.  With the checkered flag displayed, first-time 2010 winner Dwight Brown posed for the photographers in victory lane.  His #20 machine was chased across the line by Dave Morgan, Chris Morrow, Dan McHattie and Earl Ireland.

By contrast to feature events that had come before them, the Hasiuk Trailer and Container Rental Mini Stocks ran their entire race distance without a yellow flag.  While the biggest story of the year in the track’s smallest division (horsepower wise) has been Mike Nelson’s Dodge Neon, the rest of the 4 cylinder crowd has brought their game up a notch to turn the point’s battle into an all-out dog fight.  At the end of the 20 lap event, ‘Too’ Moroney had earned his second win of the year – and punctuated the victory with a slide across the hood of his Honda.  Daryl Fice, Nelson, Michael Batchelor and Tyler Junkin finished in positions 2 through 5.

Kawartha klips:  Friday, August 13th Kawartha Speedway will host a 100 lap invitational for the NAPA Auto Parts ACT Late Models, in addition to a regular show.  The track will be closed Friday, August 20th before returning to action with a 50 lap Better Carpet Thunder Car invitational Friday, August 27th.  The full schedule can be found at www.kawarthaspeedway.com.
